Tom Lost His Job

Tom Harrison has been working for a big company for the past twenty years. Last week he was told by his boss that he was retrenched. He lost his job and he didn’t know why. The company decided to lay off about one hundred workers because it was not making profits any more. The work will be done overseas. The company decided to have its products made in China because labour there is not expensive. This will help the company make some money and compete against other companies that make similar products.

Tom is not happy about what happened to him and to other workers. He said that he always did his best at work and came with good ideas. He is annoyed because the CEO of the company gets nearly one million dollars a year and she still kept her job. Other big managers get a lot of money too and they are not going to lose their jobs.

The company sent Tom a letter to tell him officially that his services were no longer required. They gave him some money because they retrenched him. Tom says that he has a big mortgage and his wife works only part time. This will make it harder especially that Christmas is coming soon. If Tom does not pay off his mortgage, the bank will take his house. Tom worked hard for many years to be able to buy a house and a car for his family. He also sends his children to a secondary school and pays a lot of money on their education. If Tom decided to sell his car, he would lose a lot of money. Tom thinks it is a matter of time until his company closes down due to bad management. He said the workers worked very hard and it was not fair for them to lose their jobs.

Some people from the workers’ union had a meeting with the managers at the company to see what could be done to save all these jobs but the CEO had already decided to get rid of the workers.

Tom is greatly concerned because he is over fifty-five years old. He says it is very hard to compete with young people applying for jobs because of his age. He also finds it hard to study again to do a different job. He thinks he is too old to start learning again or going to TAFE. Learning new skills requires some time and applying for jobs is not easy. Employers ask if a job candidate has experience before hiring him or her. He will go to TAFE to meet with an educational councillor to see what courses he can do to make sure he gets a job again.

Letter to Michael

Dear Michael,
How are you? I live now in Melbourne, Australia. Next week I will go on holiday to Sydney. I will travel by car. It will take me 10 hours to go there. We will start driving early in the morning. I will take my husband with me and my kids. We hope to see the Opera House in Sydney. We will stay at a hotel. The hotel is in the city centre. It will cost us a lot of money but we work very hard and the kids want to see Sydney. They have never been there before. All their friends went there and they tell them nice stories about Sydney. I will visit many places in Sydney and take many pictures. I will also meet my friend Hong who lives in Sydney. We worked together for one year and now she lives there. I heard that Sydney is a very big city and there are many people there. I am sure there are many Chinese people there too. I will go to a nice restaurant and have dinner with my family. We will go inside the Opera House and it will cost us 24 dollars for one ticket. I hope to have a lot of fun there. I will write to you when I come back. Talk to you soon.

Yours,
Chen Baozhu

We Went to the Zoo

Last week I took my family and went to the zoo. We went there by car. It took us about 40 minutes to drive there. It was not easy to park the car outside the zoo because there were so many cars there. We went inside and saw some monkeys. We saw some elephants. They were very big animals. They are very strong too. We saw four lions and many butterflies. I took some pictures of the animals. There were three people who played music there. They were very nice people and we talked to them. We had some sandwiches because we were hungry. We saw some kangaroos. The kangaroos jumped when they moved. We also saw three African men playing music. They played African music and some people danced. We took a video of them dancing and playing music. Everyone was having fun. Inside the zoo there were a lot of visitors. They enjoyed looking at different animals. Some of the animals at the zoo come from Africa. Others come from Asia. Still others come from Australia. When it was dark we left the zoo and went home. Other people went home too after visiting the zoo.
