Learner Permit

Maria is 33 years old and she comes from Greece. She doesn’t have a driver’s license in Australia and she needs to get one. She went to a job interview and she didn’t get the job because she didn’t have a car license. Maria telephoned Vicroads to ask how to get a car license. They told her she would have to do many things to get a car license in Australia. Because Maria is more than 16 years old, she can apply for a car license. First of all, Maria needs to get an “L” license. She will have to study a book called Road to Solo Driving to learn about driving rules in Australia. People can get the book in 20 different languages from any Vicroads office in Melbourne. They can also buy the book in English from any newsagency. The book is also available in public libraries for people to borrow. There are also some pages of the book on the internet but for Maria to pass the test she needs to read the whole book.

Maria’s friends told her to study the book very well because it has good safety tips. Maria has to take a test on a computer before she gets her Learner’s Permit. She will have to pay $20.30 to get an “L” license from Vicroads. After getting this license, she will only be allowed to drive a car with someone who has a full license. She can’t drive a car alone. Someone who has a full license has to be next to her at all times. She is not allowed to drink alcohol and drive a car. If she does, she will get a big fine.

Next week Maria will go online to book an appointment to have the computer test. She will pay the money online using her credit card. If she passes her learner permit test, she will be allowed to get a Learner Permit Card.

Maria must take her passport with her to Vicroads when she has her test. She will also take her Medicare card and Healthcare card.

Maria has to fill in a form before she takes the test. She will also get her eyes tested at Vicroads to see how good her eyesight is. There are 32 questions in the test and she has to choose the correct answer each time. She will have to answer 25 questions correctly to pass the test. Maria is a clever girl and her friends told her about a practice test that she can do on the internet before taking the Vicroads one.

Maria is sure to pass the test because she is smart. After getting her license, she will have to carry her learner permit with her all the time while driving and display an “L” plate on her car to tell other drivers on the road that she is a new driver. If she doesn’t do so, she can pay a big fine. She must not use a mobile phone while driving and a person who has a full license has to be with her to give her instructions on what to do when she is behind the wheel.

Maria will have her learner permit for three months and then she can apply to have a “P” license. She is excited because her learner permit will allow her to drive anywhere in Australia.
