Tom Lost His Job

Tom Harrison has been working for a big company for the past twenty years. Last week he was told by his boss that he was retrenched. He lost his job and he didn’t know why. The company decided to lay off about one hundred workers because it was not making profits any more. The work will be done overseas. The company decided to have its products made in China because labour there is not expensive. This will help the company make some money and compete against other companies that make similar products.

Tom is not happy about what happened to him and to other workers. He said that he always did his best at work and came with good ideas. He is annoyed because the CEO of the company gets nearly one million dollars a year and she still kept her job. Other big managers get a lot of money too and they are not going to lose their jobs.

The company sent Tom a letter to tell him officially that his services were no longer required. They gave him some money because they retrenched him. Tom says that he has a big mortgage and his wife works only part time. This will make it harder especially that Christmas is coming soon. If Tom does not pay off his mortgage, the bank will take his house. Tom worked hard for many years to be able to buy a house and a car for his family. He also sends his children to a secondary school and pays a lot of money on their education. If Tom decided to sell his car, he would lose a lot of money. Tom thinks it is a matter of time until his company closes down due to bad management. He said the workers worked very hard and it was not fair for them to lose their jobs.

Some people from the workers’ union had a meeting with the managers at the company to see what could be done to save all these jobs but the CEO had already decided to get rid of the workers.

Tom is greatly concerned because he is over fifty-five years old. He says it is very hard to compete with young people applying for jobs because of his age. He also finds it hard to study again to do a different job. He thinks he is too old to start learning again or going to TAFE. Learning new skills requires some time and applying for jobs is not easy. Employers ask if a job candidate has experience before hiring him or her. He will go to TAFE to meet with an educational councillor to see what courses he can do to make sure he gets a job again.

Letter to Michael

Dear Michael,
How are you? I live now in Melbourne, Australia. Next week I will go on holiday to Sydney. I will travel by car. It will take me 10 hours to go there. We will start driving early in the morning. I will take my husband with me and my kids. We hope to see the Opera House in Sydney. We will stay at a hotel. The hotel is in the city centre. It will cost us a lot of money but we work very hard and the kids want to see Sydney. They have never been there before. All their friends went there and they tell them nice stories about Sydney. I will visit many places in Sydney and take many pictures. I will also meet my friend Hong who lives in Sydney. We worked together for one year and now she lives there. I heard that Sydney is a very big city and there are many people there. I am sure there are many Chinese people there too. I will go to a nice restaurant and have dinner with my family. We will go inside the Opera House and it will cost us 24 dollars for one ticket. I hope to have a lot of fun there. I will write to you when I come back. Talk to you soon.

Yours,
Chen Baozhu

We Went to the Zoo

Last week I took my family and went to the zoo. We went there by car. It took us about 40 minutes to drive there. It was not easy to park the car outside the zoo because there were so many cars there. We went inside and saw some monkeys. We saw some elephants. They were very big animals. They are very strong too. We saw four lions and many butterflies. I took some pictures of the animals. There were three people who played music there. They were very nice people and we talked to them. We had some sandwiches because we were hungry. We saw some kangaroos. The kangaroos jumped when they moved. We also saw three African men playing music. They played African music and some people danced. We took a video of them dancing and playing music. Everyone was having fun. Inside the zoo there were a lot of visitors. They enjoyed looking at different animals. Some of the animals at the zoo come from Africa. Others come from Asia. Still others come from Australia. When it was dark we left the zoo and went home. Other people went home too after visiting the zoo.

Having a Book Printed

A: Good afternoon. National Printing. Allan speaking. How can I help you?
N: Oh, good afternoon. My name is Norma Smith and I'd like to make some inquiries about printing a book, please.
A: Yes, Mrs Smith. What would you like to know?
N: Actually it is my first book to publish and I was wondering if I can have just 100 copies printed.
A: Not a problem. We can do a short run for you if you want.
N: Sorry. What is a short run? I don't understand.
A: A short run is when you want to print a small number of copies. You are talking about 100 copies and not ten thousands.
N: Oh, I see.
A: Can you tell me what size you'd like the book to be?
N: It is A4. I am writing a book for children.
A: Does it have many pictures in it, Mrs Smith?
N: Yes, it does.
A: And how many pages is your book?
N: It is 120 pages. Can you tell me how much it will cost me, please?
A: I am not too sure about that, Mrs Smith. The boss is not here at the moment. He'll be back in a tick. I'll let him give you a call back when he comes.
N: That's all right.
A: Have you finished typing your book?
N: Yes, I have. I have done every thing on my computer.
A: Now we need to have a copy of the book file that you have on your computer to get every thing ready.
N: Do you mean that I have to come to your business to give you a copy of the book?
A: Actually, you don't have to come at all. You can send it as an email attachment.
N: I see. And what will happen after that?
A: We will print one copy for you to have a look at. If you are happy with the result, we can go ahead and print the remaining 99 copies.
N: That will be fantastic. And how long will it take to have the 100 copies ready?
A: It normally takes 2 days to get every thing done. So you can have the 100 copies on Thursday if you like.
N: Fantastic.
A: That seems to be all, Mrs Smith. Do you have any other questions?
N: No, I'll just have to wait to get the price. I hope it is not too much.
A: I am sure you will be happy with our price, Mrs Smith. We always have happy customers.
N: Thanks very much. You have been very helpful.
A: Not a problem. Have a good afternoon, Mrs Smith.
N: You, too. Bye.
A: Bye.

Where is My Son?

The women in this picture are very sad. They are carrying pictures of their sons, borthers and fathers. They haven't seen the men in the pictures for many years. Some of them have been in prison for up to 30 years.
The women in the picture live in a country called Palestine. It is a very poor country. They don't have good schools or hospitals.
Israeli soldiers come to their homes and arrest all the men there. They take them away to prison. The soldiers don't answer questions and they always use their guns to shoot everyone who try to stop them.
The women can't do any thing. They can't defend their husbands or fathers.
The Israeli soldiers use tanks to arrest these men. They fire their guns at Palestinians and kill many children.
The women in the picture want to have their men back. Some children have never seen their fathers. They all want one thing - to live in peace. That is their dream.

Dangers of the Sun

When I was young I was told that sunlight was a good source of vitamin D. I walked to school every day when I was growing up in Egypt and there was no problem at all. Now because of climate change there are many new health problems.
In Australia the sun can be very dangerous to everyone. It can cause skin cancer. Many people suffer from skin cancer every year. Those people don't know that if they stay for a long time in the sun it can be dangerous to them.
Some people like to stay in the sun at the beach to change the colour of their skin. This is called sunbathing. Doctors tell us that we have to avoid staying in the sun for a long time. They say that the sun can be very dangerous when it is too hot. They say that staying in the sun for a long time increases our chances of getting skin cancer. Doctors want us to do five things to avoid getting skin cancer.
1- Seek shade
2- Wear protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible.
3- Put a hat on to cover your head, neck and ears.
4- Put sunglasses on to protect your eyes.
5- Apply sunscreen every two hours.

Most Expensive Eggs

My name is Adam and I come from Pakistan. I live in Melbourne, Australia. Last Friday I went to the airport to receive my father who was coming to visit me. He had never been to Australia.
My father does not speak English. He didn't have much education when he was young. He was nervous about flying to Australia alone to see me.
The plane landed on time. I waited outside to see him but he took a long time to come out. I waited for more than one hour but he didn't turn up.
After nearly two hours I saw someone calling my name. He said they needed my help because they couldn't understand what my father was saying in his language.
When I went inside I saw my father standing next to a customs officer. She told me that my father had two eggs in one of his bags but he hadn't declared them on a card he had to fill in on the plane.
I told the lady that my father does not speak English at all and the card was in English. It was a mistake that he did not intend to make.
My father told me that an air hostess on the plane filled in the card for him. He didn't know what the card was all about.
I explained the problem to the customs officer but she wouldn't listen to me. She said my father had to pay a fine of $2000 because he brought food to Australia and failed to declare it. If he didn't do so, they would send him back to Pakistan straight away. The woman didn't want to listen to my side of the story.
I was angry at what the woman said about my father. After talking to them for more than one hour, I had to pay the money. I was not happy. My father was not happy either. This money is what someone can earn in two years in Pakistan.

I explained the problem to the customs officer but she wouldn't listen to me. She said my father had to pay a fine of $2000 because he brought chocolate to Australia and failed to declare it. If he didn't do so, they would send him back to Pakistan straight away. The woman didn't want to listen to my side of the story. I was angry at what the woman said about my father. After talking to them for more than one hour, I had to pay the money. I was not happy. My father was not sad either. This money is what someone can earn in five years in Pakistan.

A Football War

A few days ago there was a big football match. The match was between Egypt and Algeria. They are both big countries in the Middle East. People in both countries love football very much. It was a very important match because the winner would go to play at the World Cup South Africa.
It was such a big match that the Egyptian President sent his son to attend it.
The match was played in Sudan. Sudan is a very poor country and they don't have good hospitals, schools or modern factories.
The match ended and Algeria won 1/0. After the match people from Algeria and Egypt had big fights outside the stadium. Many people were taken to different hospitals.
In Egypt thousands of people went out in the streets. They were very angry and they clashed with police forces. They burnt Algerian flags. In Algeria they did the same. They burnt Egyptian flags.
On the internet people from both countries insulted one another. It was not football. It was war.
Now there are some people on the internet who say that it is wrong to hate another country because of football. They want Egyptians and Algerians to stop being silly. They want people to stop being stupid.

Fortune Teller

Look at the picture of this woman. She doesn't live in Australia and she doesn't speak English. She lives in Egypt and she speaks Arabic. Her name is Om Mona. "Om" means "the mother of" in Arabic. She is very famous in her city. She has many cards in front of her. She does not play cards. She reads them. She can tell you what will happen in the future.
Some people believe what she says and they give her money. A young man can go to her and ask her what his future wife looks like. A young girl goes to her and asks her what university she will go to?
A businessman can go to her and ask if he will make money if he starts a new business.
She also tells people things they want to know about a dream they've had.
Om Mona looks at the cards in front of her and tells the people things they don't know.
Some people get surprised when they see her for the first time. She tells them their names before they start speaking to her.
Om Mona says she never tells lies. Every thing she says is true. She does not ask people to pay a lot of money. She lets them pay what they think is a fair price for her service.
Om Mona has many customers. Some of them are film stars, policemen, students and doctors.
There are some people who don't believe that Om Mona can really tell the future. They say that no one can tell the future. She plays tricks on people to get a lot of money.
Om Mona has a lot of money. Look at all the gold she is wearing. She has a lot of money in the bank and she didn't study for many years at school. In fact she left school after finishing year six.

Benji and Joel

My name is Toto and I am a girl. I am 8 years old. I have a brother. His name is Amiro. He is 12 years old. Last Saturday we went to the city by train. We bought tickets first. We took a train to the city at 11 o'clock in the morning. We arrived in the city at 11.25 A.M. We walked in the city for some time and dad bought us some ice cream and pizza. I like pizza very much.
At about one o'clock in the afternoon we walked along the Yara river in Melbourne. When we were walking there, we saw two famous American singers. Their names are Benji and Joel. They were in Australia on a tour. Benji and Joel were having a meal at a restaurant. I was very excited to see them. My brother and dad were excited too.
We wanted to have a picture with them but they were inside the restaurant. We waited a few minutes and they came out of the restaurant. We asked to take a picture with them and they said it was OK. I was so happy.
My dad took a picture of all of us and we thanked them at the end. We took the train again and went home. My brother put the picture on his Facebook page. I emailed the picture to my friends from school. I was very lucky to go to the city on Saturday because I was able to meet Benji and Joel.

Christmas Parade

My name is Amiro and this is my sister Toto. I am 12 years old and Toto is 8. On Saturday we went to the city in Melbourne. We went there with our dad. We went to see the Christmas Parade. We had a lot of fun.

The parade started at 11 o'clock in the morning. It finished at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. It went on for two hours.

Many people were waiting to watch the parade. Many kids had red balloons and flags. They waved their flags all the time.

We saw many famous people. We saw singers and football players. We also saw some film stars.
The last person we saw at the parade was Santa Clause. He was dressed in red. He was very fat and had a long white beard. He was waving to the people lining on both sides of the street.

After the parade we went to an ice cream shop and dad bought some for us because it was a very hot day. I had my hat on and my sister had hers on too. The sun in Australia can be dangerous sometimes.

We had a video camera with us and dad took a video of the parade. I used my mobile phone camera and took many pictures too.

School Camp

My son went on a school camp last week. All the children in year six went on a camp for four days. They didn't go alone. Some teachers went with them too. My son and his friends liked the camp very much. They learned so much during the four days and they also had a lot of fun.
My son shared a room with another five boys. They are all close friends.
The students did many activities. They also helped wash the dishes. The teachers supervised them all the time.
My son was not allowed to take his iPod with him. He was not allowed to take his mobile phone. The girls were not allowed to take any jewelry or make up.
The students woke up at seven o'clock in the morning. They went to bed at ten o'clock at night.
Camps give students a chance to deal with their teachers outside the classroom. The teachers get to know their students more. Camps teach students that learning does not take place only inside a classroom.
The school camp was not free. All the parents paid $200 for each child to go on camp.
In Australia very young children in primary schools don't go on camp. They start going on camps when they are in year four. They do this when they are in year five and six. They all have great fun.

He was not allowed to take his mobile phone. The girls were not allowed to take any jewelry or make up. The students woke up at seven o'clock in the morning. They went to bed at t_n o'clock at night. Camps give stud_nts a chance to deal with their teachers outside the classroom. The teachers get to know their stud_nts more. Camps teach students that learning does not take place only ins_de a classroom. The sch_ol camp was not free. All the parents paid $200 for each child to go on camp. In Austr_lia very young children in primary scho_ls don't go on camp. They start going on ca_ps when they a_e in year four. They do this when they are in year five and six. They all have gr_at fun.

Natasha

My name is Natasha. I come from Russia. I am 25 years old and I live in Melbourne, Australia. I have been living in Melbourne for one year. Before that I lived all my life in Moscow. Moscow is the capital city of Russia. I was a student at a big university. I studied science there. In my study I used the internet to do some research. My problem was that I could not speak English very well.
A friend of mine told me about chatting on the internet. I started to talk to people using my computer and I made some friends in different countries. One day I met a man from Australia. I was happy because I wanted to improve my English. We started to talk every evening on the internet. We chatted for hours and hours. He asked me about my address in Moscow. I gave him my address and after five days I got a big surprise. He came to Moscow to meet me. I met him for the first time and my heart started beating fast. He was tall and handsome.
We fell in love and got married in Moscow. At that time my English was not that good but we could understand each other. My father and mother were very sad because I would live in a different country. I promised to visit them every year. I came to live in Australia three months later after I finished my university study. I started to go to English classes at AMES in the city. I improved my grammar a lot and also my writing skills. Because I speak English with my husband at home my English language is improving quickly. My husband does not speak Russian. When I have children, I want them to speak both English and Russian.
I will finish my English classes in three weeks’ time. After that I want to get a job. I will have to do a short course in hospitality. When the time is right, I want to go back to uni and study again. I know that getting an Australian qualification is very important to get a good job. I will study hard and at the same time enjoy my life with my husband.

My Friend Nadine

Nadine comes from Russia. She is 24 years old. When she came to Australia 10 years ago she didn’t speak any English and she had a big problem trying to talk to people. She was at high school in Russia and she wanted to go back there. Nadine started learning English at a language school. She stayed there for one year. She also learned math and science. She started to have friends. It did not take a long time when Nadine liked staying here. Her father got a job working at a meat factory and her mother started working as a hairdresser.
Nadine went to a high school in Footscray and started to study all her subjects in English. By that time she could speak English well. She also went to the public library and borrowed a lot of books to help her learn more English. After finishing year 12 she went to Melbourne University to study to become a doctor. Now she works at the Royal Women’s Hospital. She goes to Russia once a year but she likes it here in Australia more. She took some driving lessons and bought a new car.
She likes painting in her free time. She drew a picture of herself last week. All her friends liked the picture and someone who has an art gallery said he wanted to buy it for 5000 dollars. Nadine is thinking about selling the painting to the man and get the money. She said she spent only three hours painting it. That is a lot of money for very little work.

My first Job in Australia

My name is Mourad and I come from Syria. I live in Australia now. I live in a house in Box Hill. Box Hill is a suburb in Melbourne. I came to Australia 20 years ago. In Syria I worked as a mechanical engineer. I worked at a big factory.
When I came to Australia I couldn't work as a mechanical engineer. My English was not good enough. Many companies refused to give me work because of my English. The first three weeks in Australia were long and hard for me. I didn't like to stay home and not work. I hated it. My wife had a job but I didn't. I was not happy because I applied for many jobs but I couldn't get any.
I went to a car factory in Melbourne and asked to get a job. I asked to work on the assembly line. They gave me a job there and I worked with someone who spoke my language. I was very happy. It was hard work. I had to work very fast. I also went to a language school to learn to speak English. After a few years I got another job at the same car factory. I worked as an engineer. I was very happy.

I Went to Hospital

My name is Silvana and I come from Italy. I have been living in Australia for seven months. Last night I was cooking dinner and I used a knife to make some salad. When I was chopping an onion I cut my finger. It was a big cut because the knife was very sharp. My finger was bleeding a lot. I put a bandage on my finger to stop the bleeding.

My husband took me to hospital by car. I went to the emergency department. A nurse saw me. She asked me some questions. She changed the bandage for me and the bleeding stopped. She also took my blood pressure.

A man who worked at the hospital asked to see my Medicare card. He also asked about my address and I gave him my telephone number. He entered all this information on his computer. He asked me to sit down and wait with other people. He told me that a doctor will give me some stitches.

I waited at the emergency department for nearly two hours. Finally I heard my name called on the loud speaker. A doctor saw me and he asked me some questions. He gave me some stitches and I went home after that.
