Starting School

Tomorrow will be the first day for Tam to attend primary school. She turned five years old a few weeks ago and her mum and dad are very happy she is going to school. Tam went to a childcare centre near her home and she made some friends there. Two of her friends will go to the same primary school she will go to because they live in the same street.

Last week, Tam’s mother took her shopping. She bought a yellow t-shirt and a green skirt for her. She also bought her some pencils to use at school. Tam’s mother spent some time putting her daughter’s name on all the items she is taking to school. She got Tam to help her and Tam thought it was a lot of fun to put the name tags on her school items. Tam now knows how to write her name and she knows some of the letters of the alphabet. Her mum taught her to write the letters at home. At the childcare centre, the teacher gave Tam some paper and helped her learn how to write her name. Tam is very excited about starting school.

On the first day of school, there are many young kids who cry because they don’t want to leave their mums. Sometimes it is very hard for the parents to make their young kids go inside their classrooms. Some primary school teachers work hard to make the first week full of fun activities so young children start to like school and make new friends. They take young kids on excursions to the zoo or to play in nearby parks. They let them watch educational TV programs at schools. They do all they can to help the young kids settle down in their new school.

Listen to your classmate and fill in the gaps:
