This Friday students from class 1014 will visit the Caribbean Gardens. The address is 1280 Ferntree Gully Road, Scoresby, Victoria, 3179. We will carpool. We will drive along Burwood Highway and turn right on Stud Road in Wantirna.
It is free to enter the Caribbean Gardens on Wednesday and Friday but you will have to pay money on Sunday.
After we turn right on Stud Road, we will drive along for another 7 or 8 minutes and then arrive at the gardens. The gardens will be on the right. We need to arrive there at 9 am and enjoy different rides there. We are lucky because the temperature will be 20 degrees on Friday.
It is still a good idea to bring a jacket and an umbrella in case the weather changes. Also bring some money to enjoy the rides at the Caribbean Gardens. One ride will cost 3 dollars. You can go on a boat or a train for about 10 minutes. You can also bring your digital camera or mobile phone and take photos. It will be nice if you bring food from your own culture and share it with other students in class. If you like, you can buy food at the cafeteria there.
There is a market at the Caribbean Gardens. It is similar to Queen Victoria Market in the city so you can do some shopping. You can buy vegetables, clothes, presents and computer parts at the market. We will leave the gardens at 1 pm but you can stay longer if you want to. Just tell your teacher that you want to stay.
You will need to write your name and sign the excursion form that your teacher will give you. This is really important. I wish you have fun at the Caribbean Gardens.

Learning English
There are different ways to improve your English in a short time. First of all, you need to know how well you speak English. If your English is not good enough and you would like to go and study at university in Australia, you need to know that you have a long way to go. Learning a new language does not happen in a short period of time. You need a lot of practice and spend many hours studying before you realize that your language is improving.
A good thing to do is to come to class every day. If you don’t come to class, you will miss out on work that other students will do. The teacher will not be able to cover all the things you have missed because you were not in class. Of course some people have strong reasons not to come to class sometimes. They may have a doctor’s appointment or their child may be sick. There is very little they can do and they can’t help it. If you have a doctor’s appointment, you need to ask the receptionist at the doctor’s surgery to make the appointment before or after class so you don’t miss out.
How can I learn English in a short time? Well, you can listen carefully in class to what the teacher says. Try not to use your native language and use English only when you talk to others in class. Watching TV in English will improve your language a lot. If you don’t understand what is said on TV, you will pick up new words each time you watch it.
There are many web sites that you can visit to improve your listening and reading. The more time you spend on the internet, the more you will learn. Also, if you don’t do any work at home, your learning will be absolutely slow and it may take you years to speak English.
Try to practise your English with native speakers. If you find it difficult at the moment to take part in conversations with people whose first language is English, don’t stop. They may help you by speaking slowly to make sure you understand what they say. Speaking English with native speakers will help you gain confidence.
Read newspapers in English. Most newspapers in Australia have web sites that you can visit. This will not cost you any money. You will learn new words and improve your reading skill each time you visit these web sites. You will need to use a good dictionary to understand what you read. Reading words that you don’t understand does not make sense.
Visit your local library and get yourself a membership card. When you become a member, you will be allowed to borrow books, magazines, videos and DVDs. There are activities in the library that you can take part in. This will also help you make friends. When you make friends, you will enjoy living in Australia more. Your local library is open 7 days a week. You can choose a time that suites you and have a look at what the library has to offer. In your local library, you may find books in your own language. Box Hill library, for example, has a lot of books that are not in English for people to borrow.
When your 510 hours of learning English are about to finish, you can talk to one of the counsellors at AMES. He or she may tell you about courses you can enrol in to study English further. The counsellor can tell you about courses outside AMES that you may be interested in. You can see a counsellor at any time while you study at AMES but you have to book an interview first. Counsellors are very busy because they meet so many students every day to give them advice about what they can do.

Job Interview Preparation
My name is Li and I come from Shanghai. I have been living in Australia for three months now. A few days ago, I went on the internet and visited some employment web sites. I wanted to find a job. My English is good and I have the skills to work in Australia. I saw some job advertisements and I typed a resume. I emailed my resume to a few companies and applied for work.
Today, I got some good news and I feel excited. I got a phone call from a big company inviting me to attend a job interview. I felt nervous because I have never been to a job interview before in Australia. I asked a friend of mine and she gave me good advice.
My friend told me to be on time for the interview. She said that the biggest mistake to make is to be late for a job interview. If I go late, there is a very big chance that I will NOT get the job. If I am going by public transport, I need to arrive early enough so I can show them that I am punctual. My friend also told me it was OK to feel nervous. Many people feel nervous when they have a job interview. It is part of human nature. I will try to look calm and confident.
I need to read the position description for the job. The position description has a lot of important information for me to know. I need to show the people who will interview me that I have the skills that they are looking for. I need also to show them that I am a friendly person. This is very important too. I need to make my answers not too long and not too short. I need to show them that I can work in a team.
I need to dress appropriately for the job interview. Applying too much perfume is not a good idea. Wearing jeans for a job interview is a very bad idea. I need to wear something formal. I need to wear a business suit and have a tie on.
I will need to take care of some important things during the interview. First impressions are very important. I need to have clean clothes on and polish my shoes before I go. I need to smile when I enter the room and shake hands with the people who will interview me. There are things that I will not do during the interview like chewing gum or smoking. It will be silly to do so.
I need to read as much information about the company as I can. They can ask me how much I know about them. I need to know what products they sell and how many branches they have. I need to show them how I can be useful to them and how I can use my experience from the jobs I have had in China.
I need to listen carefully to the person who will ask me questions. I need to answer these questions directly. I need to go on the internet and search for some common interview questions so I can make myself ready for the interview.
At the end of the interview, they may ask me if I have any questions that I want to ask. I can ask them if they will offer me any training when I start the job. I can also ask how soon I can start if they select me for the job. I think I have a lot of work to do before I go to the interview.

Smoking
We all know that smoking is bad for health but we see so many people around us smoke. When people smoke, they become under the influence of a drug called nicotine. For new smokers, it soon becomes a habit that they become addicted. Smoking changes your mood in only 7 seconds because it goes to your brain directly and affects it. You start to feel relaxed and the effect lasts for a short time, until you smoke another cigarette.
Most children see grown-ups smoke. They think that it is cool to do so. When they start to smoke for the first time, they can get dizzy or vomit. After a short time, they feel that smoking makes them more relaxed. It becomes a part of daily life for them. Nicotine starts to take control of their bodies and they find it very hard to give it up.
Here are some facts about smoking that will shock you. Smoking causes 600,000 premature deaths each year. One cigarette contains 400 different chemicals and 250 of them are harmful. 50 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer. It causes heart disease and lung cancer. It even affects the health of unborn babies.
When you smoke, you not only badly affect your health. You also affect the health of those around you especially young children. They inhale the smoke that goes in the air. This is called passive smoking. There is a big chance that young children who see their parents smoke become smokers when they grow up.
If we all know that smoking is bad, why do governments allow the sales of cigarettes and tobacco products? The answer is simple. Tobacco companies pay a lot of money in taxes to governments. They are also very powerful. They sometimes offer government officials or their family members top jobs and offer them a lot of money.
In Australia, it is illegal to sell cigarettes to people under 18 years of age. A shop assistant can ask for proof of identity to check the age of the customer who wants to buy cigarettes before serving him or her. It is also illegal to smoke in a work place, a cinema, a theatre, on public transport or a restaurant. There are gory pictures on cigarette packets to warn customers about the dangers of smoking. Cigarette advertising is not allowed on TV, the radio or in newspapers. Shops are not allowed to display cigarette packs in public.
We need to take action to protect our health and the health of those around us. We need to create more and more smoke-free places, especially inside our homes. Smoking costs a lot of money. Australians spend more than 30 billion dollars a year on buying tobacco products. Now think how many schools, hospitals and factories we can build and how many lives we can save if we don’t spend that money on cigarettes.

Child Labour
Many children in poor countries don’t have a choice to go to school. Their families send them out to work in agriculture, mining, factories or even go to war as soldiers. Some children are sometimes sent to work in the sex industry. This is all wrong.
Parents in poor countries can’t afford to send their children to school. They need the income that the children bring because those parents don’t have enough money. More than 100 million children from poor countries work in hazardous conditions. They can be forced to commit crimes or sell illegal drugs. Most of the time, these children don’t have a choice. They can also be beaten or humiliated if they refuse to work. In some situations, children are sometimes moved from their own country to a different one to do work there. This all happens against their well.
More than 22 thousand children die at work each year because they do dangerous jobs. Child labour is common in poor African and Asian countries. There are laws to stop child labour in these countries but the police give a blind eye to the problem. Countries where child labour is common include India, Pakistan and those in sub Saharan Africa. Children can work 12 hours and get less than 50 cents a day.
There are many things we can do to stop child labour around the world. Education seems to be the best way to stop it. People need to be aware of the problem and know some facts about child labour. Parents need to have less numbers of children so they won’t have to send them out to work.
In Australia child labour is not permitted. A child is allowed to get a part-time job for a limited amount of hours at the age of 14 years and 7 months. The job that a child can get must not involve any hazards. Children have to go to school until they finish year 10.

Car Accident
A 25-year-old man is in hospital after crashing his car in Mont Albert in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was driving his car at nearly 100 kilometres per hour in a street where the speed limit is 60. The young man lost control of his car and hit a tree at 2 am.
A fire started immediately but two men who live in nearby houses pulled the man to safety. A woman rang 000 and an ambulance and a fire truck arrived a few minutes later. The driver lost a lot of blood and was about to die. Doctors in Box Hill hospital said the man was lucky to be alive after the accident.
A police officer said that the man had a high alcohol concentration level in his blood. They said that it was wrong to drink and drive. A close friend to the driver said his license had been suspended but he continued to use his car. He is expected to face court sometime in the future. The man is expected to pay a hefty fine for driving while his licence was suspended.
No other people were hurt in the accident. One woman told the local newspaper that she heard a bang and everyone in the house woke up. The woman thought her house was about to collapse. She rushed outside and saw a car on fire and two men taking the driver to safety. She thought the driver was dead when she saw the damage to the car.
The police interviewed the driver’s wife at his address. She told the police they had had a fight two hours before the accident took place.

Do you know what YouTube is?
Do you know what YouTube is? It is a website that millions of people use every day to watch videos on the internet. Because everything is changing nowadays, some people don’t prefer to watch TV. They like to use their computers instead and go online to read the news or do anything they like. They can spend hours and hours using the internet.
YouTube started a few years ago. It made it easy for people to put the videos they took with their video cameras online and share them with their friends. Anyone who knows how to use a video camera and knows a little bit about computers can put videos online.
Some of the video clips on YouTube are really funny. People can watch video clips of their favourite singers. If people miss their favourite TV program because they are busy or are at work, they can go online and watch it. It is very easy to do so.
The only problem with using YouTube is that it is a lot of download. You need to check how much download you are allowed to get each month. Also if you have a slow computer, it can take some time for the video to download.
YouTube has made some people very famous and super rich. YouTube made a young boy from Canada whose name is Justin Bieber the world’s most famous singer a few months after he started putting video clips of his songs on the internet.
I like going on YouTube to learn new things. There are thousands of English lessons that I can find. There are also many people on the internet who can teach you how to use computers or do anything that you want to learn. There are video clips that can teach you how to play the piano or the guitar. If your child has a problem learning maths, for example, he or she can go on YouTube and watch a few maths video clips. I am sure this will help.
It is interesting to know that there are millions of new video clips that people put online every day. This is better than having to watch only seven or eight TV channels. You can watch a video clip and then email a link to your friend so he or she can watch it when they go online.
There are different web sites that people can use to watch video clips online but YouTube is the most famous one. There are also some schools that don’t allow students to use YouTube because they can waste their times and not do enough study.
