Job Interview Preparation

My name is Li and I come from Shanghai. I have been living in Australia for three months now. A few days ago, I went on the internet and visited some employment web sites. I wanted to find a job. My English is good and I have the skills to work in Australia. I saw some job advertisements and I typed a resume. I emailed my resume to a few companies and applied for work.

Today, I got some good news and I feel excited. I got a phone call from a big company inviting me to attend a job interview. I felt nervous because I have never been to a job interview before in Australia. I asked a friend of mine and she gave me good advice.

My friend told me to be on time for the interview. She said that the biggest mistake to make is to be late for a job interview. If I go late, there is a very big chance that I will NOT get the job. If I am going by public transport, I need to arrive early enough so I can show them that I am punctual. My friend also told me it was OK to feel nervous. Many people feel nervous when they have a job interview. It is part of human nature. I will try to look calm and confident.

I need to read the position description for the job. The position description has a lot of important information for me to know. I need to show the people who will interview me that I have the skills that they are looking for. I need also to show them that I am a friendly person. This is very important too. I need to make my answers not too long and not too short. I need to show them that I can work in a team.

I need to dress appropriately for the job interview. Applying too much perfume is not a good idea. Wearing jeans for a job interview is a very bad idea. I need to wear something formal. I need to wear a business suit and have a tie on.

I will need to take care of some important things during the interview. First impressions are very important. I need to have clean clothes on and polish my shoes before I go. I need to smile when I enter the room and shake hands with the people who will interview me. There are things that I will not do during the interview like chewing gum or smoking. It will be silly to do so.

I need to read as much information about the company as I can. They can ask me how much I know about them. I need to know what products they sell and how many branches they have. I need to show them how I can be useful to them and how I can use my experience from the jobs I have had in China.

I need to listen carefully to the person who will ask me questions. I need to answer these questions directly. I need to go on the internet and search for some common interview questions so I can make myself ready for the interview.

At the end of the interview, they may ask me if I have any questions that I want to ask. I can ask them if they will offer me any training when I start the job. I can also ask how soon I can start if they select me for the job. I think I have a lot of work to do before I go to the interview.
