Parents in poor countries can’t afford to send their children to school. They need the income that the children bring because those parents don’t have enough money. More than 100 million children from poor countries work in hazardous conditions. They can be forced to commit crimes or sell illegal drugs. Most of the time, these children don’t have a choice. They can also be beaten or humiliated if they refuse to work. In some situations, children are sometimes moved from their own country to a different one to do work there. This all happens against their well.
More than 22 thousand children die at work each year because they do dangerous jobs. Child labour is common in poor African and Asian countries. There are laws to stop child labour in these countries but the police give a blind eye to the problem. Countries where child labour is common include India, Pakistan and those in sub Saharan Africa. Children can work 12 hours and get less than 50 cents a day.
There are many things we can do to stop child labour around the world. Education seems to be the best way to stop it. People need to be aware of the problem and know some facts about child labour. Parents need to have less numbers of children so they won’t have to send them out to work.
In Australia child labour is not permitted. A child is allowed to get a part-time job for a limited amount of hours at the age of 14 years and 7 months. The job that a child can get must not involve any hazards. Children have to go to school until they finish year 10.
