If I am going by public transport, I need to arrive early enough so I can show them that I am punctual. My friend also told me it was OK to feel nervous. At the end of the interview, they may ask me if I have any questions that I want to ask. I can ask them if they will offer me any training when I start the job. I can also ask how soon I can start if they select me for the job. I think I have a lot of work to do before I go to the interview.

Child Labour
Many children in poor countries don’t have a choice to go to school. Their families send them out to work in agriculture, mining, factories or even go to war as soldiers. Some children are sometimes sent to work in the sex industry. This is all wrong.
Parents in poor countries can’t afford to send their children to school. They need the income that the children bring because those parents don’t have enough money. More than 100 million children from poor countries work in hazardous conditions. They can be forced to commit crimes or sell illegal drugs. Most of the time, these children don’t have a choice. They can also be beaten or humiliated if they refuse to work. In some situations, children are sometimes moved from their own country to a different one to do work there. This all happens against their well.
More than 22 thousand children die at work each year because they do dangerous jobs. Child labour is common in poor African and Asian countries. There are laws to stop child labour in these countries but the police give a blind eye to the problem. Countries where child labour is common include India, Pakistan and those in sub Saharan Africa. Children can work 12 hours and get less than 50 cents a day.

Car Accident
A 25-year-old man is in hospital after crashing his car in Mont Albert in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was driving his car at nearly 100 kilometres per hour in a street where the speed limit is 60. The young man lost control of his car and hit a tree at 2 am.
A fire started immediately but two men who live in nearby houses pulled the man to safety. A woman rang 000 and an ambulance and a fire truck arrived a few minutes later. The driver lost a lot of blood and was about to die. Doctors in Box Hill hospital said the man was lucky to be alive after the accident.
A police officer said that the man had a high alcohol concentration level in his blood. They said that it was wrong to drink and drive. A close friend to the driver said his license had been suspended but he continued to use his car. He is expected to face court sometime in the future. The man is expected to pay a hefty fine for driving while his licence was suspended.
No other people were hurt in the accident. One woman told the local newspaper that she heard a bang and everyone in the house woke up. The woman thought her house was about to collapse. Do you know what YouTube is? It is a website that millions of people use every day to watch videos on the internet. Because everything is changing nowadays, some people don’t prefer to watch TV. They like to use their computers instead and go online to read the news or do anything they like. They can spend hours and hours using the internet.
YouTube started a few years ago. It made it easy for people to put the videos they took with their video cameras online and share them with their friends. Anyone who knows how to use a video camera and knows a little bit about computers can put videos online.
Some of the video clips on YouTube are really funny. People can watch video clips of their favourite singers. If people miss their favourite TV program because they are busy or are at work, they can go online and watch it. It is very easy to do so.
The only problem with using YouTube is that it is a lot of download. You need to check how much download you are allowed to get each month. Also if you have a slow computer, it can take some time for the video to download.
YouTube has made some people very famous and super rich. YouTube made a young boy from Canada whose name is Justin Bieber the world’s most famous singer a few months after he started putting video clips of his songs on the internet.
I like going on YouTube to learn new things. There are thousands of English lessons that I can find. There are also many people on the internet who can teach you how to use computers or do anything that you want to learn. There are video clips that can teach you how to play the piano or the guitar. If your child has a problem learning maths, for example, he or she can go on YouTube and watch a few maths video clips. I am sure this will help.
It is interesting to know that there are millions of new video clips that people put online every day. This is better than having to watch only seven or eight TV channels. You can watch a video clip and then email a link to your friend so he or she can watch it when they go online.

Is it good or bad to own a car?
Most families in Australia have cars. Some people own more than one car. Owning a car is really important if you want to go to work, do the shopping, take your family members out or do other things.
There are many good things about owning a car. First of all, it is easy to travel to different places. You can use your car to go anywhere any time. In addition to that, you can arrive at your destination faster than using public transport. If you use a bus or a train, you need to spend some time waiting for them to arrive and you have to do some walking too. A car is very important if you look after your elderly grandparents. You sometimes need to take them out to go to doctors’ appointments or do other things. It is really hard to go on foot or use public transport if you take old people out.
On the other hand, some people believe that owning a car is not a good thing. Cars increase pollution and make the environment dirty. They also believe that cars are much too expensive nowadays and not many people can afford to buy them. People who own cars have to get loans from banks and they end up paying nearly double the price. To own a car, you need to pay for registration every year. You also need to spend money on petrol and to get your car serviced.
When you drive your car, you will need to pay to change the tyres. It is not safe to drive a car that has old tyres. This can cause accidents because you will not be able to stop in time. You also need to have insurance. You pay your insurance company money each year. If you don’t have insurance and you are involved in an accident, you can be in big trouble.
It is both difficult and expensive to park your car especially if you go to the city. If you park your car in the city, you will have to pay a lot of money. You need to check if you are allowed to park where you want or your car can be towed away. If your car is towed away, you will end up paying more than $500 to get it back.
Cars also cause accidents. Every now and then you hear about those drivers who have been drunk. They sometimes kill themselves or other people because they can’t control their cars. You also see some young people who drive at very high speeds. Driving at high speeds is very dangerous.

Amado
When Amado was a child in Africa, there was a big war in his country. Amado didn’t go to school because it was far away from his home and his parents were afraid for his safety. The war lasted a few years and many people died. Most of the people who died were civilians. They were not army soldiers. Amado hated the war and wanted to go somewhere else where he could go to school and live in peace.
One day, some soldiers came to Amado’s house and took his father away. Amado didn’t know where his father was taken. His mother and sisters were crying. Then after a few weeks, his father came back to the house. He was short of breath and he asked them to go away at once and leave the house.
The soldiers who took Amado’s father away wanted him to carry a gun and kill people. Amado’s father didn’t want to go to war. He didn’t want to kill people. He hated the war and that’s why he ran away from the soldiers.
Amado and his family walked on foot for a few days. They had very little food. They crossed the border at night and went to a different country. They lived as refugees for a few years. Amado couldn’t go back to his country because it was not safe to do so.
At the refugee camp, Amado went to a small school. He learned to read and write. He also did small jobs around the camp. One day Amado’s family had a chance to leave the refugee camp travel to start a new life in Australia.
When Amado came to Australia he didn’t speak English but he was willing to learn. He knew the alphabet and could read some numbers in English but that was not enough. He went to a language school and after a short time, he could say a few sentences. He worked hard to improve his language and after a few years he went to university to study law.
Amado wanted to study law because he wanted to help people from poor countries especially those who have wars in their homelands. Now Amado is in his final year at uni and he hopes to be able to work for the United Nations.

Milly the Cat
The kids decided to call the cat "Milly" and took many pictures of her. They started to learn many things about keeping an animal in the house. They were afraid that if they let her out in the garden, she might get lost.
After a few days, they started taking her out to play with them in the garden. Later on, she used to go in the garden on her own.
We noticed that as she grew older, she climbed the fence and disappeared for some time before coming back. We were wondering where she was going. We also started to see a strange "handsome" cat that came to our garden quite often.
A few weeks ago, we noticed that her tummy was bigger and bigger. Our cat became pregnant. In a few days she will have small kittens.
We are so excited about our cat having small kittens soon but will be more excited to see them disappear from our house. We will give them away to our friends because having one cat in the house is more than enough for us.

This one here on the right hand side. A company in the city wants a front desk receptionist to work full time Monday to Friday.
Yes, I see the ad. Are you interested in applying for this job?
Yes, I think I can get it. I also like to get a job in the city so I can use public transport.
Do you like using public transport to go to the city? You must be crazy. Trains and buses are always crowded during rush hours.
I have no other choice. I don’t have a car. Plus even people who drive in the morning find it difficult because the streets are crowded during rush hours.

Li From China
Li is an architect. He lived in China for 25 years. He finished his studies there and decided to immigrate to Australia. He went to the Australian embassy and got a form to apply to become an immigrant. He took the form home and read it carefully. He filled in the form and went back to the embassy to lodge it there.
He paid the application fees and after a few months, the embassy contacted him. Li got a letter from the embassy asking him to do an English test to see how well he could speak. He passed the test because he had studied English for some years. He was also asked to undergo medical tests to make sure he was well enough to start his new life in Australia. Not long after that he got his visa to immigrate.
He went to a travel agent’s and booked a plane ticket to travel to Melbourne. The travel agent gave him a discount. His family and friends went to the airport to see him off. He felt nervous about leaving his home country and living in Australia. The plane took off and Li flew for ten hours before finally landing in Melbourne. He collected his bag and went through customs.
The customs officer checked Li’s passport and asked him some questions before allowing him to pass. Li was very happy to finish his check out. He took a taxi and went to stay in a friend’s house for a few days.

Excursion
Next Wednesday we will not have classes at AMES in the morning or in the afternoon. The students at AMES will be going to the city to visits some of the sights there. Our class will be in one big group with some of the students from other classes. We will have about 70 students in our group and this is a very big number. We will have to meet at the Box Hill train station at 9 o’clock in the morning. We will catch an express train to the city. The train will leave Box Hill train station at 9:24.
We need some time before we take the train. Every time we have an excursion, I see some of the students coming late. Please meet me at 9 to give us some time so we don’t miss the train. We need to catch the 9:24 train because we don’t want to be late for our first place to visit.
The first place to visit will be the National Art Gallery of Victoria. It is a walking distance from the train station and it should take us about ten minutes to arrive there. If a person walks alone from the train station, it should take less than 5 minutes. Walking in a big group is always slower because some students get busy talking and they stop to take photos along the way.
We will enter the National Art Gallery of Victoria from the groups’ entrance. I will show you where it is. Please don’t bring big bags with you because you can’t enter the building carrying them. You need to leave any big bags at the entrance and this can take some time. We don’t have any time to waste. We need to move as quickly as we can.
It is a good idea to walk in small groups. We can’t have about 70 people walking together in one group inside a gallery. It’s a good idea for each class to go with their own teacher and visit the different sections at the gallery.
After visiting the art gallery, we will walk to the Shrine. It is an open place and you can enjoy your time there. We will meet two guides and they will show us the place. We will watch a cinema show there that will go for about 15 minutes. I am not sure what sort of weather we will have on Wednesday so it is a good idea to bring an umbrella with you in case it rains.
After visiting the Shrine, we will walk to Eureka Tower. Eureka Tower is the highest building in Melbourne. We will go to the top of the building and enjoy the view from there. We need to be on time there and that is why it is good to move fast with the group and not stay behind.
Some students chose not to come and visit these places because they have been there before. The aim of this excursion is to make students have a chance to make friends with students from other cultures.
You don’t need the teacher to tell you to be on time. You need to be on time yourself and if you happen to miss the train, don’t go back home. Take a train on your own and meet us at one of the places we will visit.
Bring an umbrella with you, a digital or a video camera if you have one and some money to buy lunch. You can bring your own lunch from home and share some food with other students from the class. You also need to check if the weather is going to be sunny or rainy on the day to dress accordingly.
We will finish visiting all three places at 1 o’clock and after that we will have lunch at South Gate by the Yarra River. It is such a nice place there and you can take some photos using your mobile or digital camera. Please stay with your own group and follow instructions from your teacher.

My Weekend
Last Saturday I woke up at 9 o’clock in the morning. First of all, I washed my face and had my breakfast with my family. After that, we went to the city by train. It was a sunny day and the wind was blowing. There was a celebration in the city. There were a lot of people there. We saw people singing and dancing.
I danced with my husband/wife. We went to a Chinese restaurant to have a meal. The food was delicious but expensive. We paid 200 dollars. After that we went to St Kilda beach. The children played on the beach. They went to Luna Park. They were very happy there. They went on many rides and had a lot of fun.

Dr Tom works at a university in London. He is 40 years old and he likes travelling. This year he decided to go to Africa. He wanted to see how students learn at schools in Africa. Before he travelled to Liberia, he saw his doctor. The doctor gave him some injections. The doctor told him to be careful when he travelled there because there are many diseases there.
Dr Tom visited some schools in Liberia. He was shocked to see that the students were very poor. They didn't have any computers at their schools. They didn't have any CD players to help them learn. They didn't have any DVD players to use at school.
Liberia is a very poor country in the West of Africa. It had two civil wars that ended in 2003. Hundreds of thousands of people died during the civil wars. Schools were destroyed. Now there is no war but the prople are very poor.
The students walk to school every day because they don't have cars. They go to school because they want to learn.
