My Old Car

My name is Tom. I come from Romania. I came to Australia 20 years ago. In Romania I worked at a factory. I worked long hours and I had little money.
In Romania I had a small car. I used it to go to work every day. I was not married and I didn't have any children so I didn't buy a big car.
My car didn't cost me much money. I used to drive to the shopping centre on the weekend and do my shopping. I put my shopping in the car at the back. Girls used to smile at me when I drove it. They thought my car was cute.
One day I had an accident. I hit another car. The other car was very expensive. The driver of the other car was a young girl. She got off her car and she was angry. I offered to pay for the repair but she didn't take any money. I invited her to dinner and after two weeks we got married. I kept my small car in the garden at our house.
Now I live with my wife in Australia. We have two new cars. I work at a bank in Box Hill and my wife works at a big company in the city. We travel to Romania every year and I make sure my old car is still working. I still love my old car.

An Artist

My name is Ahmed. I come from Egypt. I am 30 years old and I am married. I live in Footscray. I live in a small house in Barkly Street. My postcode is 3011. I am an artist. I paint pictures.

I have been living in Australia for one year now. When I came to Australia I could not get a job. My English was very bad. I needed to get a job. I needed to pay my rent and buy food.

I finished three paintings. Some people liked them. They gave me $1000 for my first painting. I bought a used car. It was not new. It was 10 years old.
I sold the second one for $1500. I sold the third one for $4000. Now I have a lot of money. I do a lot of painting. I finish a new painting every week. I make a lot of money every week.

Now I need to improve my English. I am a good painter but I can't speak English well. I will go to school to learn English. When I speak good English I want to open an art gallery. I want to sell more paintings there.

My School Will Close

My name is Mohamed Ali. I am 12 years old. I live in France. I speak French. I have two sisters. My father and my mother come from Moracco.
I study at an Islamic school near Paris. Paris is the capital city of France. I have many friends in my school. We study together. We love our school very much. We learn Arabic. I play sports with my friends and I learn music too.
The bad news is that my school will have to close down. The French government does not want to give money to our school.
I am not happy about this. I want to come to my school and study here.
The parents are not happy either. The girls started to cry. They love the school too. I don't know what to do. I can't give money to my school because we are poor. I hope the French government gives money to the school. I hope my school will not close.

The Ambulance Service

My name is Tamara and I come from Russia. I am 35 years old and I have three children. I don't have a job. I learn English at AMES in Box Hill. I go to AMES every day to learn there.
Two months ago I took a bus to go to school. I got off the bus in Box Hill and walked to school. When I was walking in the street I fell down. I hurt my foot. It was very bad.
The people in the street telephoned 000. An ambulance came and they took me to hospital. I was inside the ambulance for only 5 minutes. A doctor saw me in hospital. I had an X-ray. I also had a cast on my foot. I could not walk for three weeks.
I got a letter in the mail. The ambulance service asked me to pay $550. The money was because they took me to hospital. I was angry. It was a lot of money to pay.
I rang the ambulance service and asked why I had to pay all that money. The man on the phone asked if I had a Healthcare card. I told him that I had one. He said to me that I didn't have to pay any money because I had a healthcare card. I was happy to learn that I didn't have to pay any money any more.

I Lost My Mobile

My name is Hong and I come from China. I am 35 years old. I have been living in Australia for three years. I work at a big supermaket in Doncaster. I don't live in Doncaster. I live in South Yara. It is a very good suburb in Melbourne.
Last week I went to a mobile shop. I bought a new mobile. The mobile had a camera. It was not cheap. It was expensive. It cost me 600 dollars to buy. I was happy to buy that mobile.
I used my mobile for a few days. I took some pictures of my children. I downloaded some music from the internet on my mobile. I was very happy.
Last night I went to the city. I went there by train. I kept my mobile in my bag. There were 20 dollars in my bag too. When I got off the train, I left my bag there. I forgot to take my bag and I lost my mobile.
